Thank you for your tribute to Aaron Bushnell. When I saw the story in the Post, my thoughts went back to seeing photographs of monks setting themselves afire in protest of the war. Those were shocking, disturbing, and heart breaking acts, and as a young adult just past my teens, I spent a good deal of time thinking about them.

Moral courage has ceded to moral certainty. We as citizens cannot force Netanyahu to stop the war in Gaza. At the moment there may be a significant cease fire if the hostages are returned. If that occurs, it will be the work of President Biden and his administration that nudged Netanyahu toward a break in the fighting.

What we can and must do is use our agency to bring moral courage and ethics into public discourse again. Your essay is a good start. Other substack and Medium authors are engaging in similar discussions. We each need to commit to elevate Aaron Bushnell’s act of moral courage by continuing the discussion started here.
